CLAIM IN YOUR BRIEFNeeds Revision

“The court held that non-compete clauses are unenforceable.”

What the source says
“The restriction is unenforceable in so far as it extends beyond twelve months.”

Cited judgment, paragraph 41

The court limited its finding to restrictions longer than twelve months. The brief states it as a general rule.

What it catches

Six things that go wrong in briefs.

Each one with the claim, the passage Velydian reads, and the verdict. Examples for illustration.

A holding stretched

“The court held that non-compete clauses are unenforceable.”

“The restriction is unenforceable in so far as it extends beyond twelve months.”
Needs Revision

The finding is limited to restrictions over twelve months.

An open question cited as decided

“The Federal Supreme Court has held that the notice period applies.”

“Whether the notice period applies can be left open here.”
Not Supported

The court expressly left the question open.

A misquotation

“The termination was ‘manifestly abusive’.”

“The termination was not justified.”
Not Supported

The judgment does not use the quoted words.

The wrong pinpoint

“See paragraph 52.”

The passage relied on appears at paragraph 38.
Needs Revision

Right authority, wrong paragraph.

An authority that does not exist

“Müller v. Weber (2019) confirms this.”

No judgment with these parties and year could be found.
Unverifiable

Flagged before filing. The kind of citation courts now sanction.

A commentary where the judgment exists

“As the commentary notes, the duty extends to former employees.”

The commentary cites a judgment that says this directly.
Supported

Supported. The judgment itself is offered as the stronger authority.

Not another fact checker

Not just right or wrong. Supported or not.

Velydian checks the quotations and pinpoints. It also weighs what a brief does with an authority: what it says the court decided and how strongly it says it. A quotation can be exact and the submission around it can still mislead the court.

One claim, three levels · illustration“The court held that such clauses are void.”Needs RevisionSource: the judgment the brief cites. Example for illustration.
  1. Level 1

    Facts

Quotations, pinpoints, parties and dates, checked against the text of the authority.

Does paragraph 41 say void, or voidable?

Velydian findsSupportedThe judgment does find the clause void.A citation check stops here: true.
  2. Level 2

    Interpretation

Whether the holding supports the proposition, or only something narrower.

Did the court decide this, or something narrower?

Velydian findsStretchedThe court found it void in a consumer contract. The brief applies it to a contract between two businesses.
  3. Level 3

    Judgement

Whether the submission is as strong as the authorities, and what cuts the other way.

Do the authorities checked qualify or contradict it?

Velydian findsOverstatedA later judgment of the same court, found and read, reached the opposite result on similar facts. The brief does not cite it.Verdict: Needs Revision. The quotation is right; the brief claims more than the court decided.

How it works

Upload the brief. Every authority comes back with its evidence.

PDF, Word, text or Markdown, or paste it in. Velydian finds each statement about a case, statute or article and checks it in one of three ways.

Against the authorities it cites

When the brief cites a judgment, a statute or an article published online, Velydian opens it and checks the quotation, the pinpoint and what was decided.

Statements with no citation

Velydian searches official websites, research databases and the wider web, keeps the strongest sources and checks the statement against them.

Against your own files

Attach judgments from your research database, the contract or the expert report, and every statement is checked against them. You see the price before it starts.

Three layers of checking

Surface tools check that a source exists. Velydian reads it.

Layer 1

Distortions and inaccuracies

Quotations that drift, pinpoints that miss, a holding quietly widened.

A quotation from a judgment with one word changed.

Layer 2

Bias and fabrication

Authorities that do not exist, a case that says something else, and what was left out.

A case that cannot be found under the parties and year cited.

Layer 3

Stronger sources

When a statement rests on a secondary source, Velydian looks for the authority itself.

A commentary is flagged, with the judgment it relies on offered instead.

One verdict per claim

Four verdicts, each with its evidence.

Supported

The authority checked backs the statement as written.

Needs Revision

Close, but a word in the quotation, the pinpoint or the reach of the holding does not match.

Not Supported

The authority does not back the statement, or decides something different.

Unverifiable

No text could be read or found that settles it, for example a judgment in a paid database you did not attach, or one that does not exist.

Open any verdict to see the passage and the reasoning behind it. Correct a line or swap a source and it is checked again. Velydian weighs the evidence; the legal judgement stays with you.

Questions

Before your first brief.

Does Velydian give legal advice?

No. It checks whether each authority says what your document says it does, and shows you the passage. The legal judgement stays with you.

Is client confidentiality protected?

Your data resides in Switzerland and is processed in Switzerland and the EU, under GDPR and Swiss data protection law.

What about judgments in paid databases?

Attach the judgment as a PDF and the statement is checked against it. Without the text, the verdict says Unverifiable instead of guessing.

Where do the sources come from?

Three places. The sources your document cites; sources Velydian finds on official websites, research databases and the wider web for claims without a citation; or your own files, if you attach them.

What happens to my document?

When you run a check, your document’s text is sent over an encrypted connection to our servers and AI services in Switzerland and the EU. To find evidence, short search queries built from your claims are sent to web and scholarly search services. Your document’s content and results are deleted automatically about 24 hours after your check; source links and summary data are kept.

Which languages does it check?

English is measured and in daily use. German and French are in validation.

Can I rely on Velydian as my only check?

Velydian supports human review. It shows the evidence behind every verdict so you can decide. In high-stakes work, expert judgement stays essential.
